OLYMPIC athlete Jared Deacon was the guest when a school celebrated its new status as a specialist sports college.

The European and Commonwealth 400m relay gold medallist gave a motivational talk to students at Roseberry Sports and Community College in Pelton, Chester-le-Street, County Durham, yesterday.

A member of South Shields Harriers, he unveiled a commemorative plaque.

Specialist sports college status was granted last September, but celebrations were delayed until a £250,000 building programme was completed.

It included extending the sports hall, upgrading changing facilities, the installation of an indoor climbing wall and new cricket nets.

The headteacher, John Stafeckis, wants to provide wider sporting opportunities for students and the community.

He said: "As well as providing a varied and challenging curriculum for our students in PE and sport, the college is now open from 5pm until 9pm every weekday and provides a full programme of physical activity and sport for the community.

"We pride ourselves in supporting local clubs with a high-quality sports venue to develop participation in sport among young people, ladies and whole families.

"I can think of no more inspirational person to help us celebrate our new status than Olympic athlete Jared Deacon.

"I am sure he will help encourage even greater use of our wonderful facilities.
