Winter Handicap Singles Final

Stephen Hughes of Meadowfield took the title when he beat Stephen Coates of Langley Park at Meadowfield under the control of referee, Ken Rider.

Both players started cautiously with Coates potting some good reds but was unable to add a colour. Hughes steadily came into the game, always managing a colour when he took a red and eventually finished with the last red, a pink and down to the blue to see Coates concede at 42-11.

The first scoring attempt in the second frame saw Hughes take on a suicidal pink after the first red. Coates capitalised on the error to make 22. This restored his confidence and he went on to take the frame and level the match with a 64-28 win.

Frame three proved to be Coates' downfall for he pulled back into the frame after Hughes had put in a 23 break followed by 13. However Hughes still needed the yellow to level the frame and went on to take green and brown. Coates potted the blue but missed an easy pink. After a bout of safety Hughes took the pink to win 54-46.

The fourth frame was close to the colours when Coates missed a good chance to lay a snooker on the yellow. Hughes immediately took advantage to clear to the pink to win 50-32 and take the title, leaving Coates as the beaten finalist for the second consecutive time.
