It's been quite a week for Stokesley SC who won the Wearside League Cup but then failed to clinch runners-up position.

The Teessiders celebrated on Monday when an only goal from Jonathan Newton was sufficient to earn them victory at Birtley Town in the Cup Final but there was disappointment two days later when they failed to gain the one point needed from their last match of the season.

Stokesley celebrated, defeating Birtley Town by an only goal scored by Jonathan Newton. Their opponents were reduced to ten men on the hour and the Teessiders held on to win their second cup after previously lifting the North Riding County Cup.

They also reached the finals of the Sunderland Shipowners' Cup and the Monkwearmouth Charity Cup only to lose out to North Shields and Boldon CA respectively.

On the League front, they went into their last two matches in the knowledge that just one point would see them end in second position but after losing to North Shields on Saturday, they were surprisingly defeated on Wednesday when they hosted Annfield Plain who had won only seven of their previous 33 matches and ended fourth from bottom.

Kevin Dixon and Philip Moat put the Plain two up before Neil Fawcett reduced the arrears but for all their effort, Stokesley failed to find an equaliser and it was Birtley Town who celebrated the news which meant that they are runners-up.

Wolviston have ended the season on a high, winning their last four matches without conceding a goal. Their final victory came on Monday when David Dowd scored the only goal against Gateshead Reserves.
