NOVICE crews are invited to mess about on the river at the weekend in aid of charity.

The Durham Raft Race is making a return to the River Wear after a 15-year absence.

It is back on Saturday, jointly organised by Durham firefighters and students, with proceeds to be divided between two good causes.

Competitors are invited to build a racecraft for a crew of four.

Entries so far are less-than-sleek racing machines, and include a bathtub and a floating armchair.

While the more traditional Durham Regatta takes place on the river two weeks later, the raft race is designed for those with less expertise in water-based sports.

Each crew must raise at least £100 in sponsorship.

Events are from 11am to 5pm, with family entertainment to amuse those on land as well.

Rival dragon boat crews from Tees Water Sports Centre and the Three Rivers Serpents group in Durham, will stage a challenge race.

There will also be a display of vintage and modern fire appliances, fairground rides, a bouncy castle, water dunk-tanks, fire hose targets, a balloon race, stalls and a drinks marquee.

Admission is free, but visitors will be invited to donate to the Fire Service's National Benevolent Fund and Durham University charities' fund, which is raising money to provide clean water in undeveloped countries.
