A FUN day will be held next week to encourage people in Wear Valley to go into action to do voluntary work and improve their fitness.

The volunteers in action day will be held at Parkside School and Community Association, in Willington, next Thursday to coincide with national Volunteers' Week.

Wear Valley District Council and 2D, the support network for the voluntary and community sector, have teamed up to arrange the event around a sports and arts theme.

Stalls and demonstrations from a host of voluntary and community groups will be open from 10am to 3pm.

Activities will include cheerleading, tai-chi, golf, basketball, cricket, netball, gymnastics and circus skills.

The district council joined forces with The Northern Echo, Durham Dales Primary Care Trust and Northumbrian Water, to try to reduce the number of deaths from heart disease through the A Chance To Live campaign, which promotes a healthier lifestyle.

There will also be drama, music and craft workshops, readings from Crook Writers and activities for toddlers.

One of the organisers, Lindsay Wright, said: "The event aims to celebrate, promote and reward community volunteering and has a sports and arts theme to tie in with the Chance To Live campaign."
