TWO police officers have been praised for their bravery after entering a smoke-filled building to rescue a man trapped inside.

Officers were called to Davis Terrace, Easington Colliery, late on Tuesday after reports that a man was repeatedly banging on the wall of his home.

PCs Barry Mollett and Andrew Sutherland went to investigate and had a call en route from the fire brigade, saying there was a fire at the address.

The two officers were first at the scene and could see smoke and flames coming from an upstairs window, while the rest of the house was full of smoke.

At the front door, they could see a man through a wired glass window in an obvious state of panic.

At first they were unable to break it down and while PC Sutherland continued trying to get inside, PC Mollett went to the rear of the house.

He forced open the back door, went inside and found his way through to the living room.

He found the 55-year-old man in the hallway, suffering from smoke inhalation and the effects of drink.

PC Sutherland managed to join his colleague and between them they carried the man into the garden.

They went back into the house to see if anyone else was inside but were driven back by the flames.

Both officers were treated for smoke inhalation and the victim was taken to Hartlepool General Hospital where he was kept in for observation.

It is believed the fire was caused by a cigarette falling on a mattress.

Chief Inspector John Bell said the quick thinking and brave actions of the two officers had undoubtedly saved the man's life.

"Police officers are trained to deal with emergencies, but this was an outstanding piece of work.

"Once they realised they were first on the scene they both reacted quickly and professionally, without thought for their own safety. They deserve the highest praise and I am sure they will be nominated for official recognition."
