Norton lead Division One following their excellent victory over Ormesby Hall, writes Malcolm Pratt.

After restricting the visitors to 131 all out, Norton won losing just one wicket as Hirst batted through with an unbeaten 37 and Hall, who went in at number three, finished with an fine 81 not out.

Batting first, Ormesby Hall lost early wickets before Newsome raised the score with a good contribution of 30 but for most of the time the batsmen were well contained particularly by O'Brien who captured five wickets for only 36 runs. Hewell had two for 28 and Tate two for 19.

Hinderwell are second but they had to hold on for a draw against Paragonians. Responding to a target of 147, Hinderwell were 133 for nine at stumps and their saviour was opening batsmen Hicks who batted throughout the innings ending unbeaten on 70. Hughes took three for 34, Grainge two for 18 and Melrose two for 20 for Paragonians, who batting first realised 146 all out. Opener Burton was their top scorer with 43 while Alison made 26. Theaker was in good form with ball for Hinderwell claiming five wickets for 54 runs and Sykes took three for 18.

Moorsholm were 65 all out in 29.5 overs for whom Stuart Theaker captured four for 36 in ten overs, Simon Bowes three for 21 from the eight overs he delivered and Mark Allan two for five in six overs half of which were maidens.

When Staithes went in to bat they needed only 11.3 overs and did not concede a wicket reaching the low target. Allan followed up his bowling performance hitting one six and three boundaries in an unbeaten 28 and Andrew Theaker also carried his bat for 26, with four fours.

The Boosbeck batsmen also found run-making difficult and they totalled only 58 from 29 overs at the The Merlin. More than half the runs came from Bob Brown whose innings of 31 contained one six and three boundaries. Geoff Burdon claimed three for 21 in 15 overs, eight of which were maidens but it was Kevin Moss who was the biggest threat to Boosbeck and in 14 overs, including six maidens, he returned the magnificent figures of seven for 28.

When The Merlin went into bat they had little difficulty winning by seven wickets as Sutherland carried his bat for 22 out of a total of 64 for three.

Loftus defeated Dormans by nine wickets despite being required to score one 162.

After conceding both openers for a combined total of 13 runs, Dormans recovered to Moor (34) Iqbal (36) and Hatfield (48) and the respectable total of 161 was accumulated.

Barratt took five for 41, Smithies three for 70 and Morrison two for 36 in the Loftus attack.

When they batted, Loftus were given a good start by Pearson and Sanderson before the latter was caught for 23. Sanderson, who ended unbeaten on 56 found an able partner in Dixon (49no) and the pair formed a unbroken century partnership for the second wicket steering Loftus to a nine wickets win.

Brotton are in pole position in Division Two after defeating Loftus by 19 runs.

Batting first, Brotton posted 120 all out which included a top scoring 34 by opening batsman Ridley while for Loftus, Bulmer returned four for 53 and Kenfield three for 31.

When they went into bat, Loftus were always in with a chance before the field eventually closed on 101. Parnaby captured 4 for 24, Smith three for seven and Yeoman two for 41.

Cowpen Bewley defeated Hartlepool RC by six wickets and are joint second in the table together with Normanby Parklands.

Hartlepool ended with 140 on the board which included an unbeaten 27 by Tweed, who went in at number three and a top scoring 61 from Prosser.

Walker was the most successful bowler in the visitor's attack picking up four for 19 runs while Nixon had two for 28 and Atkinson two for 14.

When they responded Cowpen Bewley conceded an early wicket but Quinn (22) and Laing (26) recovered the situation. Atkinson then became the match winner with the bat ending unbeaten on 41 and forming a productive undefeated partnership for the fifth wicket with Magin (23no). Hartlepool utilised six bowlers in their attack and the most successful was Prosser with two for 29.

New Marske overtook the Normanby Parklands total of 121 for seven with four wickets remaining. Following an uncertain start to their reply, New Marske were indebted to Alderson for his unbeaten 39 while Hailstone contributed 20 and Taggart 22 not out.

When they made first use of the wicket, Normanby Parklands had opener Jefferson in form and he scored 32 before Tyreman added 29 before being run out. Alderson claimed three for 37, Robinson two for 26 and Taggart two for 24 in the New Marske bowling line up.

Skelton Castle reached just 79 by Normanby Parklands for whom Frewyn captured three for 12, McGough two for 13 and Walker two for 11.

Runs were more plentiful when Normanby Parklands made first use of the wicket and realised 186 for the loss of just two wickets. Scrafton batted throughout ending undefeated on 86 and Mead was 64 not out.

Dormanstown were all out for 102 but still made Ormesby Hall fight all the way before losing by just one wicket.

Ormesby Hall made an indifferent start to their reply but eventually won by one wicket when five players made double figures including last man Tedds with a valuable 16 not out partnering number ten batsman Roberts who carried his bat for nine runs.

Hatch took five for 43 and Lloyd four for 58 in the Dormanstown attack.

Batting first, Dormanstown just managed to pass three figures mainly as a result of the efforts of opening batsman Johnson who scored 50.

Pelling had three for 21, Pool three for 31 and Roberts two for 16 for Ormesby Hall.

North-East Midweek League Cup

Rowlands Chartered Accountants skipper Shaun Collins won the toss against the Civil Service and elected to bat and quickly put on a half century opening partnership with Davy Bell at the Close House venue.

They eventually took the score to 69 before Bell fell for 29 with Collins leading by example as he went on to score 55 out of a total of 121-6.

Andy Horner and Davy Charlton both claimed three wickets for just seven runs while Jeff Thomson also claimed three scalps at a run less than Charlton and Horner to dismiss the Civil Service for just 48.

Despite only managing 81-7, Coquet still managed to see off Tyne & Wear Fire Brigade/Kibblesworth who were restricted to jus 69 with Mark Currie top scoring with 32 while McClelland and Walsh ripped the batting to shreds with four wickets each and Ward chipped in with 3-5 from just 13 deliveries.

In another low scoring affair, Old Record Players 85-9 then restricted Merz & McLellan to 43-7 despite Trevor Crosby's 23 not out with Chris Quigley snapping up 3-5 from his four over stint.

Tony Turner 65 not out top scored in the Sage CC total of 141-5 as they beat Fenham CC by five wickets after Feroz 38 had top scored in their 138-6.

Ryton 108-7 are also through after pegging back the Park House reply to 87-5. Chris Haggie 35 and 27 each from Neil Robinson and Paul Henderson were the backbone of the Ryton innings.

West End won by ten wickets after bowling out Cooksons for 69 with Azam taking 4-9 and then carrying his bat for an unbeaten 46.

Wear Valley Sunday League

Shildon teams fared well in the latest round of matches with both the Timothy Hackworth team and the ISA team winning handsomely. Timothy Hackworth entertained Ferryhill Station Surtees and when the visitors batted first they were dismissed for 68 with Vince Carr leading the scoring on 25, whilst Peter Wilde took 3 for 5. The Hackworth reply saw Ian Longstaff with 19, Dave Bullimant 17 and Stuart Hall 16 as they knocked off the target for the loss of two wickets in 16 overs.

The visiting Newton Aycliffe PWS batted first at Shildon ISA and wer all out for 82 with their leading scorers being Trevor Evans with 24 and Kevin Pugh with 27, whilst Tony Travers took 2 for 3. I. S. A. replied with 84 for 2 in 15 overs with Graham Thurman making 30 and Andy Sewell 23.

Wolsingham visited Coxhoe Cricketers Arms and knocked up a massive 164 in the 20 overs with Josh Wilks 30, Tim Wilks 29, Wayne Booth 26, Simon Campbell 25 and Richie Hanlon 20. The home side never looked like matching this scoring rate and their innings ended at 99 for 5 with Dave Copley making 25, Gary Shepherd 28 and Phil Rutherford 24, while Simon Campbell took 2 for 7.
