FIFTY people from east Cleveland will take part in an awareness day looking at health and safety issues for the over-50s.

The event, on Wednesday, will focus on personal safety at home and while out, bogus callers and traders, road safety and fire safety.

Healthy eating, easy exercises and a review of pensions will also be on the agenda.

A wide range of organisations, including Redcar Disability Access, Welfare Rights, Warm Zone, Trading Standards, Carers Together and Redcar Mind will be available to give information about their work.

The invited audience will be given free transport to the event at Redcar Adult Education Centre in Corporation Road, a healthy lunch, courtesy of the Pie Crust at Loftus and a goodie bag including a package of home safety equipment, pens and personal alarms.

It will be Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council's fifth multi-agency awareness day, and will be opened by Older People's Champion, Councillor Mike Findley.

The council's health education officer, Margaret Moore, said: "If the event is as successful as the previous four years, we will have equipped everyone with the knowledge and understanding to keep themselves safe and well.

"As our older people are living longer, one of the aims of days like this is to help them to live better - safe and sound."
