A TOWN'S 'municipal mouthpiece' will be extolling its virtues against rivals from across the globe in coming weeks.

Chester-le-Street's town crier Marjorie Dodds is limbering up her larynx for a busy month ahead as she takes part in both world invitational and British championships.

She has received a call-up to the prestigious Lord Mayor of Chester's Invitational World Town Crier tournament, which runs for a week from Friday, June 11.

As the event features a special female town crier category for the first time she hopes to have a strong chance of success providing her proclamations remain pitfall-free.

She expects to be competing against up to 40 rivals, some of who will have travelled from as far afield as New Zealand and South Africa.

One of Marjorie's four cries will give her a chance to proclaim the merits and delights of Chester-le-Street in the town's near namesake in Cheshire.

On her return from Chester, Marjorie has just a fortnight to get her vocal chords in tune for the British Town Crier championship, being staged in Durham, over the weekend of July 3 and 4.
