POLICE in Newton Aycliffe are appealing for information about an attempted mugging.
The incident happened at the junction of Stephenson Way and Pease Way at about 12.30am on Saturday, May 30.
A 27-year-old woman walking home on her own was approached by a couple who asked her for a cigarette.
But the approach was a ruse to assault her and make an attempt to steal her mobile phone and purse. They fled empty handed when the woman shouted for help.
The female had shoulder length untidy blonde hair and was about 5ft 5ins. The man was taller and both spoke with local accents.
Witnesses are asked to contact PC John Lamb at Newton Aycliffe police station on (01325) 314401.
