A RENOWNED team of motorcycle daredevils will be among the highlights of this year's open day at Britain's biggest Army base.

The Flying Gunners display team will be in action at Catterick Garrison, North Yorkshire, at the open day on Saturday, June 26.

The Flying Gunners represent the cream of riding skill from the Royal Artillery and are an extension of their military role which includes leading guns into position and carrying vital messages.

The soldiers, drawn from all regiments within the Gunners, are selected for their skill and courage and are trained to provide displays of speed, excitement and showmanship.

At what is one of the most popular one-day shows in the region, the Army will also be rolling out its military muscle and big guns.

Also in action will be paratroopers from the 4th Battalion, the Parachute Regiment, who will provide a freefall display.

Organiser Major Laurence Wright said this year's event was particularly poignant as half the money raised would go to the Army Ben-evolent Fund, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary.

"Although these are very busy times for the British Army as a whole, the servicemen and women based at Catterick Garrison really look forward to putting on a first class Open Day and enjoy it as much as the visitors," he said.

Prices are £5 per car, £1 for pedestrians and 50p for children. The event will take place at Marne Barracks, just off the A1, from 10am to 5pm
