PUBLIC toilets will get a £200,000 revamp over the next three years.

Area environment committees will soon be helping to decide where to spend the investment to improve the area's public conveniences.

It is hoped to reopen and refurbish the toilets in Marske Stray in time for the summer season. Other issues to be discussed by the committees are a decision on the future of the Northgate toilets at Guisborough, the toilets at Marske roundabout and the Saltburn cemetery and King George V playing fields at Guisborough.

Members will be asked to help to create a priority refurbishment programme, with the help of a report on the condition of all the public conveniences and where the money needs to be spent. The report has recommended that some toilets could be rebuilt, refurbished or demolished.

The six newly-formed committees in the Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council area are made up of ward councillors, who will meet every six weeks.

They will oversee the work of the council's new department of area management. They will look at levels of resources for services such as the warden service and how to ensure the cleanliness of the area as well as discussing issues like recycling.

Dates and venues will be advertised locally and are available on the council's web site, www.redcar-cleveland.gov.uk
