A CORNER of Eston has had a makeover with the completion of a community garden and two squares of land in the Mansfield Road and Jubilee Road area.

Eston Residents Association worked with environmental regeneration charity, Groundwork South Tees, to develop designs for the public space.

The group felt it was important to feature Eston's heritage in some way and this has been achieved through the incorporation of specially-made panels within the metal boundary fencing.

The panels depict mining scenes and were designed by the group together with blacksmith James Godbold.

Councillor Ann Higgins said: "To see our ideas incorporated into the railings promoting our town's important ironstone heritage is very important to us. This is another community project which we are sure will give pride and pleasure to the people of Eston."

Later this year, pupils from Bankfields Primary School will help Groundwork plant bulbs, adding a splash of colour to the gardens next spring.

The scheme, designed by community landscape architect Liz Small, is the first Groundwork South Tees project to involve the Wise Group.

The garden has been funded though Redcar and Cleveland Partnership's Neighbourhood Renewal Fund and cost £10,000 to implement.
