A factory is fighting competition from abroad by adapting its production line.
LG Philips Displays, in Durham, is producing a thin television tube to challenge flat-screen technologies.
The 21-inch Real Flat SuperSlim cathode ray tube (CRT) has already secured orders from manufacturers in Italy, Turkey and Poland.
It is the latest version of a product that has helped the factory keep a competitive edge in a challenging market. Mass production and encouraging customer demand further boost the factory's prospects.
David Coppock, plant director, said: "Once again, the commitment and capability of the people at Durham has enabled us to demonstrate our innovation.
"We are leading the world in the development of this technology and congratulations go to everyone involved.
"This tube allows CRT-based TV sets to compete effectively against new flat-panel display technologies. Set makers can now produce mainstream TVs that appear little deeper than flatter screen technologies, yet still benefit from the superior picture performance and price of CRTs."
At only 14in deep - a 20 percent reduction in comparison to similar CRT products - the tube represents a breakthrough in design.
By the end of the year, the Durham factory anticipates shipping more than 100,000 SuperSlim tubes to key customers.
