ENCOURAGING education in rural areas was the focus of a two-day event that attracted learning and education professionals from all over the UK.

The event, at Northallerton College, was organised by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) North Yorkshire.

Delegates included headteachers, staff from Connexions, and training professionals and key topics for discussion included the 14 to 19-year-old curriculum and adult and community learning.

David Harbourne, executive director of LSC North Yorkshire, said: "The challenges faced by rural areas are very different to those in urban areas. Geographical isolation, transport difficulties and the need for tailored provision, for often quite small interest groups or business areas, all create particular challenges in meeting local learning needs.

"Many of us based in rural areas are facing very similar challenges and that's why we wanted to host this event."

Sonja Belchere, an internal verifier from The Training Partnership in Staffordshire, said: "This event has been superb for those involved in 14 to 19 education, there has been a great variety of people, enabling excellent networking opportunities."
