PLANS for a large Argos distribution centre on the outskirts of a town would not cause traffic problems, council officials have said.

The development on the Faverdale East business park, in Darlington, would bring 700 jobs but concerns have been raised about road congestion caused by traffic using the development.

Members of Darlington Borough Council's planning committee are expected to give their support on Wednesday.

Council officers are recommending approval of the scheme, which includes 550 car parking spaces, 50 for bicycles and 20 for motorcycles.

Approval would be subject to conditions, including Argos agreeing to provide a pedestrian island with links to a footpath and cycle path.

The company would also have to pay £16,000 for two bus stops, shelters and raised kerbs in the area.

A further £25,000 would be sought towards linking the footpath and cycle path to the nearby High Grange housing estate.

A report to councillors says there would be 2,240 traffic movements each day but says that is considered minimal.

The report adds: "This is a significant development which has the potential to generate a considerable number of jobs for Darlington, to the benefit of both the town and the wider area's economy."
