A DAVID Beckham look-alike received some light-hearted abuse after England were knocked out of the European Championships.

Shaun Campbell, 23, from Brandon, County Durham, came in for some ribbing after the country's dream of cup glory ended on Thursday night when hosts Portugal won a penalty shoot-out.

Shaun was hired by opticians Specsavers to help celebrate the seventh anniversary of their branch in North Road, Durham City, on Saturday.

After the England captain's penalty miss, some people suggested he could use some of the company's products himself.

"One person said 'I bet you're glad you're working here so you can get some glasses and improve your penalty-taking'," said Shaun.

"There have been a few comments but it has all been said in jest. Mind you, I'm surprised I haven't been beaten up because of it."

Beckham has come in for criticism from many quarters after England crashed out in the quarter-finals.

"I don't think he had a good tournament, but there are other players who didn't do as well as they should have," said Shaun.

Hunt is on for lookalikes

A SEARCH is on to find lookalikes of England footballers.

Dead-ringers for Wayne Rooney, Michael Owen, David Beckham, Steven Gerrard and the rest of the squad are all invited to apply.

Young people who bear a resemblance to the footballer's glamorous wives and girlfriends, like Rooney's fiancee Colleen McLoughlin, Sven Goran Eriksson's feisty girlfriend Nancy Dell'Olio, and Posh Spice are also wanted.

A panel of judges will hold regional heats and choose the most convincing lookalikes, aged under 16, for the competition from sweet specialists Swizzels Matlow.

Potential lookalikes can log on to www.swizzels-matlow.com.
