Northern League chairman Mike Amos has criticised some aspects of the new National Rule book. The publication, which the league had to adopt at its AGM in early June, makes several new provisions, some of which haven't gone down too well with the chairman. While he agrees that there are one or two good ideas, such as a club's requirement to register pitch dimensions with the league at the start of the season, there are others which he says "are a product of people who cannot leave well alone."

One rule in particular has incurred Amos' wrath - the requirement for a club to produce a proper match programme for every game.

He said: "This is a classic example of people in high places forgetting, if they ever knew, the realities of life at the mucky end.

"They have forgotten that there are people who already do a considerable amount of work for clubs, and this is a huge amount of extra work on top of that.

"A simple piece of paper isn't enough, the FA say that a programme must be produced." Other new rules want clubs to hand in their team sheets 45 minutes before kick-off, instead of the current 30, that all clubs must have e-mail, and that all ground inspections will incur a non-returnable fee. But one of the biggest changes is the abolition of the much-criticised February 1st rule, and instead registrations will be valid for one season only.

Seaham Red Star have appointed Rob Spink as assistant to manager Peter Mulcaster. Spink replaces Andy Boynton, who quit last month.
