ELEVEN students have been rewarded after completing more than 100 hours of community service.

The sixth form students at Teesdale Comprehensive School, in Barnard Castle, have been presented with Community Sports Leaders and Millenium Volunteers awards certificates.

Six of the students - Philip Brown, Marc Davies, Mark Fletcher, Kevin Maughan, Helen Bainbridge and Wayne Thwaites - completed the award as part of their course in leisure and recreation.

The others - Joanne Lamb, Joanne Meads, Hannah Stephenson, Fiona Williams and Emma Sellwood - gave up their spare time to complete the awards.

The students worked with primary school children and adults with special needs to gain the award. They also coached football, basketball and tennis.

To be recognised as Millennium Volunteers they had to complete at least 100 hours of work in the local community. Many also completed a British Red Cross basic first aid course with sports injuries.
