SOUTH Korean electronics company Samsung may have to repay up to £10.5m of Government aid following the closure of its Teesside factory.

Samsung was given a regional selective assistance grant to help it open its Wynyard plant in 1995, which it said would create 3,000 jobs.

But Samsung closed earlier this year, with the loss of its remaining 425 jobs, and the Department of Trade and Industry said it was pursuing a claim against the company for the outstanding money.

The target of 3,000 jobs was never met and only 1,700 people were employed at the site.

Production was moved to Eastern Europe and the Far East where labour costs are cheaper.
