THE latest addition to Mick McCarthy's new-look Sunderland aims to bury any ideas he's arrived with a Mr Versatile tag hanging round his neck.

Mark Lynch agreed a three-year deal at the Stadium of Light last week and the former Manchester United defender has targeted making the right back spot his own next season.

The 22-year-old played only once for the Red Devils in a Champions League match against Deportivo La Coruna in March 2003. But the majority of his first-team experience came on loan at St Johnstone as a teenager when he played in a number of positions for the Scottish Premier League side.

And it appears that Lynch is in no hurry to return to a jack of all trades role. He said: "My position is right full-back - definitely. When I was at St Johnstone on loan I seemed to play all over.

"I played everywhere - I even played behind the front two in one game.

"They had me playing everywhere and I think hopefully coming to Sunderland I will be a recognised full-back and that's where I'll be playing all the time."

Lynch, who arrived on a free transfer, comes from the same footballing Old Trafford school that brough the likes of David Beckham, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt to the international stage.

Unfortunately the presence of Gary and Phil Neville, amongst others, at the Theatre of Dreams meant his final push to Sir Alex Ferguson's first-team has been blocked.

"It was a footballing decision first and foremost to come here," admitted Lynch. "I've had no guarantees. Mick's not said 'you'll be starting first game of the season' because as a manager that's something that would be daft to say.

"I've got to prove to Mick and to the other players that I'm good enough to play.

"They play 4-4-2 and that's what the gaffer told me when I met him.

"That won't change much and hopefully I'll be playing at right back in that system for him."

Lynch won't be a complete stranger on Wearside having played alongside Sunderland youngsters Jonjo Dickman and Ben Clark while all three were trainees at Old Trafford.

Former Sunderland reserve team boss Ricky Sbragia, now in charge of United's second string, also gave him a glowing report.

Lynch said: "I've known Jonjo for a while and I saw him when I came up for my medical. He's been looking after me while I'm finding my feet in the area.

"But I didn't need to speak to Jonjo or Ben Clark before I decided to sign. Ricky Sbragia had nothing but good things to say about the club.

"In my own mind as soon as I heard Sunderland were interested then I was definitely interested in signing."

* Sunderland's Julio Arca has not been included in the Argentina squad for the Olympic Games and so will be available for the start of the season.

However, teammate Nicolas Medina, currently part of the Argentine squad that has made it to the final of Copa America, has been named in the party for Athens next month.
