ADVENTUROUS youngsters are being offered the chance to go on safari and explore the wilderness on their doorstep.

Woodland rangers working for the Forestry Commission are running a school holiday event in Hamsterley Forest, near Bishop Auckland, County Durham, next Monday.

Activities, crafts and team-building games are on the programme, with an opportunity to learn about wildlife and mini-beasts.

Chief recreation ranger Richard Gilchrist said: "There will be bags to do and all that's needed are sturdy shoes, waterproofs and a packed lunch."

The supervised event is suitable for eight to 12-year-olds and activities are from 10am to 3.30pm, costing £5. There is no need to book. Meet at the visitor centre, telephone (01388) 488312.
