SO far, so good. That was David Hodgson's verdict on Darlington's pre-season preparations as his side geared up for the visit of Leeds United tonight.

The Quakers boss is delighted with the way his squad is shaping up for the new season, and believes their fitness levels are a major reason behind their unbeaten summer programme - including wins over Bradford City and Blackpool.

"The lads have put an enormous amount of work in and you can see that it is paying off," said Hodgson. "Fitness-wise you could see we were better than Bradford and Blackpool.

"It's important we go into the new season with a good level of fitness. Teams often take a few weeks to get into their stride but if we can maintain our levels we have every chance of starting well."

Hodgson will be hoping tonight's encounter will provide him with another opportunity to assess potential signings. Argentinian striker Sebastien Ferrero has recovered from a foot injury and will feature, while forwards Kim Grant and Alistair Hessleton will be handed chances to impress.

The much-travelled Grant is looking for a new club after leaving Yeovil at the end of the season. Hessleton is a free agent after failing to earn a contract at Oldham

Hodgson has decided not to take his interest in Lens' Ibrahima N'Diaye any further despite the striker scoring in Saturday's 2-0 win over Blackpool.

Meanwhile, Leeds, who held Spanish giants Valencia to a 2-2 draw on Sunday, are expected to include several first-teamers tonight, including former Middlesbrough man Craig Hignett and Steve Guppy.

However, there will be no North-East return for Michael Ricketts, who has a hamstring injury.

Ipswich midfielder Chris Bart-Williams and former Arsenal goalkeeper Rami Shaaban could be involved for the Yorkshiremen after boss Kevin Blackwell took the duo on trial at Elland Road.

Over 2,500 tickets have been sold for the game and at least 15 executive boxes have been filled. Leeds have sold their requested allocation of 500 tickets.

Ron Greener will be honoured this evening when the Presidential suite is re-named after the Quakers legend.

A ceremony will be held before kick-off to recognise the achievements of Greener, who made 492 appearances for the club between 1955 and 1968.

Quakers will not be unveiling their new kit tonight following a delay with manufacturer, Xara.

Friday's friendly at Barrow has been cancelled.
