CAMPAIGNERS in favour of a Yorkshire regional government say they will continue to push for a "Yes" vote, despite the Government's postponement of the referendum.

Members of the Yorkshire and Humberside branch of the Transport and General Workers' Union (T&G) and the Regional Labour Party say their enthusiasm for the campaign has not been dented by the announcement by local government minister Nick Raynsford that November's referendum would be shelved

Stella Guy, regional secretary of the T&G and chairwoman of the Regional Labour Party, said: "While we are very disappointed at the delay, we still intend to pursue the campaign for a "Yes" vote.

"Critical to this is a full postal ballot in order to maximise the reach of the vote so that any result is a genuine reflection of the thoughts, views and wishes of the people of Yorkshire and Humberside and can be enacted with a clear mandate."

Mr Raynsford has blamed concerns over the all-postal ballot when he told MPs the Government would have to delay its planned referendums for the North-West, Yorkshire and Humber- side.

The referendum for the North-East regional government will still go ahead on November 4.
