A TEENAGER was arrested for possessing cannabis at the weekend, when police raided a riverside spot where a group of young people had gathered.

Officers kept watch on the Lendings area beside the River Tees at Startforth, near Barnard Castle, after reports of boys and girls drinking and smoking late at night.

The 18-year-old who was found with cannabis was given a formal caution but will not be prosecuted. Others with him were advised against using drugs.

Acting Inspector Bill Dutton, of Barnard Castle police, said yesterday: "I would like news of this arrest to reach other young people and their parents.

"A problem has been emerging with young folk gathering around the Lendings and at Gill Lane, in Startforth, to use cannabis and drink alcohol.

"They should be aware that we know about them, and that if they break the law they will be arrested. Parents should also realise there is a problem, and that if their children are involved they are likely to end up in serious trouble."

The teenagers have been going along a path from the Thorngate footbridge to spots hidden by trees and shrubs.
