A RETIRED guide dog is recovering from lifesaving surgery after collapsing during a walk.
The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association paid the £1,000 bill for a windpipe operation for Ned, a 12-year-old black labrador.
Ned was John Easton's eyes until four years ago and stayed with him in Spennymoor when he could no longer work.
Mr Easton said: "Guide Dogs look after the animals until the day they die. Ned had to retire because he started to have epileptic fits, but he still lives with me and my new dog Donny. He is 95 per cent back to normal thanks to the operation. He is a good worker and very loyal. A lot of people know him and have asked how he is."
