THE family of a soldier who died at the Deepcut Army base are calling for an investigation into the police handling of his death to be made public.

Geoff and Diane Gray have been fighting to uncover the truth over how their son, also called Geoff, died at the Surrey barracks nearly three years ago.

The Army said he committed suicide, but the 17-year-old's parents maintain the private did not kill himself.

Surrey Police carried out a £1m inquiry into the deaths of Pte Gray and three other soldiers from gunshot wounds, but found no grounds to prosecute.

Devon and Cornwall Police were then asked to review Surrey's handling of the probe. That report is due to be finished next month, and Pte Gray's family, originally from Seaham, County Durham, are calling for it to be made public.

Mrs Gray said: "We are having one inquiry after another and we are still not going to be able to see the report.

"We are being kept in the dark and are no further forward from the day Geoff died to finding out how he died - that's why we need a public inquiry.

"The findings of this latest investigation will go straight to Surrey Police and no one else. We cannot see if the police have done a proper, thorough investigation, and it should be released in the public interest."

A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Police said it would be up to Surrey Police to decide whether to publish the report or not.

A spokesman for Surrey Police said it would want to see the report before any decision was made.
