A man has given himself up to police, hunting the rapist of a school girl.

A 23-year-old Middlesbrough man walked into South Bank, Middlesbrough, police station, in the early hours of Tuesday.

The 13-year-old girl has told Cleveland Police she was attacked in a doorway in Elliot Street, Middlesbrough, at about 12.15am on Sunday. Elliot Street runs down the side of the Purple Onion public house, where the victim had been drinking alcopops with a 13-year-old girl friend on Sunday night.

The victim told her parents she was sleeping over at a friend's. The school girls had spent between one and two hours "socialising'' in the Purple Onion before the alleged attack took place.

A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said staff at the pub would be questioned about serving two children, "as part of the rape inquiry.''

The area around the pub is monitored by batteries of close circuit television cameras and footage showed the victim leaving the Purple Onion with a man who was more than six feet tall in height and wearing a white top and dark trousers.

Anyone who can help the police with their inquiries should call Middlesbrough CID on (01642) 301558.
