SEVERAL arrests have been made after a newlywed couple had about £2,000 of gifts and possessions stolen from their hotel.

Jayne and Owen Pinchbeck, from Redcar, made the discovery after returning to their room at the Spa Hotel, Saltburn Bank, Saltburn.

They had returned from their evening reception at Redcar Rugby Club, which followed their wedding ceremony and reception at the Saltburn hotel.

The couple, who have been engaged for 13 years and are saving to buy a house, said thieves opened cards and took cash, including a £150 gift from Mrs Pinchbeck's grandparents, along with a duvet set, towels and underwear and Mr Pinchbeck's epilepsy medication.

Police said the theft was one of eight offences involving people entering rooms at the hotel, which had been reported over a two-month period.

The incident happened in May, but the couple have recently learnt that they may only receive £200 in compensation from the hotel's insurance firm.

Mrs Pinchbeck, 32, a mother of two, and Mr Pinchbeck, 38, said they were seeking legal advice about whether to take action against the hotel.

A spokesman for the hotel said the establishment would refrain from commenting until the police investigation was complete but said it was working towards a satisfactory conclusion.

A police spokesperson confirmed officers were investigating eight offences of people entering rooms at the hotel.

"It is not a common incident in Saltburn," she said. "We are investigating eight offences of reported thefts at the Spa Hotel."

Anyone with information about the theft or other thefts at the hotel is asked to call Redcar CID on (01642) 302626.
