COUNCILLORS have defied planning officers' advice by voting to approve a revised scheme to build a four-bedroomed detached house at Beech Tree Farm, Sleights Lane, Rainton, near Thirsk.
Members of an area planning committee of Harrogate Borough Council voted three in favour, one against with six abstentions. Because the vote was against planners' advice, councillors must reconsider the application next month.
Planning officer Mike Warden said development would involve loss of existing commercial premises, and restrict potential for redevelopment.
Mr Warden said the scheme, applied for by K Walker, would mean incongruous and inappropriate intrustion into surrounding countryside, out of keeping with the village.
He said: "In my opinion, it defies common sense to allow a new house so close to a large, intensive pig farm."
