PLANS for a controversial caravan park that divided opinion in a North Yorkshire village have been approved.
Councillors have given permission for a maximum of ten caravans at the site in Richmond Road, Brompton-on-Swale.
Richmondshire District Council approved the plans on Tuesday, despite objections from six villagers and the parish council.
Applicant Jim Fryer, who is also a district councillor, initially applied for 15 caravans, but it was decided to reduce the number after advice was taken from officers.
Mr Fryer has had a Caravan Club licence for five caravans on the field for nearly 30 years.
Council leader John Blackie told the meeting the larger site would be good for the local economy.
"In Brompton-on-Swale, there is a shop and a pub - they need the footfall of people if they are to keep going," he said.
"I don't believe in the last 27 years there's been on single complaint about the caravan site."
Five villagers wrote to the council in support of the application.
