GREY Abbey landed the Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby last Saturday in amazing style from a high class field. Graham Lee had the ride on this Howard Johnson-trained, revitalised chaser and led from the front.

The Scottish National winner was a sound jumper throughout and only three finished. Tim Easterby's course specialist Turgeonev was lying second, although never going to head the sparkling grey, when falling at the last.

Kate Walton, featured trainer last week in the D&S Times' Northern Horse, landed the opener with Galway Breeze, while Friday's meeting saw Ferdy Murphy, Mick Easterby, Kevin Ryan and John Quinn all on the scoreboard.

Lee went on to Carlisle on Sunday to land a further three. The Reverend, another Johnson charge from the Graham and Andrea Wylie string, and Grattan Lodge, also for the Crook trainer, were the first two, plus one for Cumbrian trainer Martin Todhunter.

Lee's fellow northern jockeys who have made names for themselves on the Flat this summer are Paul Hanagan, Joe Fanning and Robert Winston.

Hanagan had a superb Saturday at Newmarket, winning two, including on Zero Tolerance for David Barron, with Mark Johnston's Go Padero (Fanning) in a respectable fourth.

Guy Reed's Yorkshire pink and gold colours were seen on another homebred when Alfonso landed the 7f handicap under Michael Hills and trained by Barry Hills.

Hanagan was second on the Andrew Balding-trained Arctic Desert and those who backed the Yorkshire owner to beat the Yorkshire rider were rewarded with a near £240 exacta.

Keith Reveley sent out a winner the previous day at headquarters when Into The Shadows was partnered by young Tom Eaves, who has had a consistently good term.

Fellow apprentice Paul Mulrennan hit a 629-1 treble at Ayr's Saturday matinee meeting, partnering winners for Chris Fairhurst, Tim FitzGerald and Howard Johnson. Mulrennan is based with Mick Easterby and had gone 65 rides without a win before this rash of success.

Middleham rider Darren Williams won for fellow Middleham man Micky Hammond on Boris The Spider.

Joe Fanning travelled to Germany on Sunday, but Mana D'Argent faded in the soft ground.

The rider has had an amazing summer and landed a Tuesday treble for his boss, Mark Johnston, at Catterick.

Go Padero followed his good Newmarket run by winning, together with McEldowney and Lady Karr. The young McEldowney may run tomorrow at Doncaster, Deirdre Johnston said after the race.

Tim Easterby won at Redcar on Monday with Game Lad and, at Catterick, Paris Bell gained a third win. Both these were bred by father Peter Easterby.

The former was partnered by David Allan, who has made a good name for himself this year and also won at Lingfield for Julie Camacho. Paul Quinn rode Paris Bell, who this year has given him three of his four victories.

Adrian Nicholls and father David teamed up again with Trinculo in the Catterick claiming sprint and connections kept their winner by lodging a friendly claim.

Robert Winston hit his ton on Wednesday at Musselburgh, partnering a double, including one on Sedgefield man Ray Craggs' charge, Shape Up. Paul Hanagan rounded off our week with another for Richard Fahey, on Harrison's Flyer, a consistent sort.

Tomorrow, an interesting battle looks set in the November Handicap. Mark Johnston has two, Albanov and Bendarshaan, with Darryll Holland and Fanning booked respectively. Tim Easterby is also double-handed, with Go Tech (D Allan) and Jeepstar (G Gibbons). Any of the four could be the one - but watch out for Hanagan on Bob Hodges' West Country raider, Tender Falcon. If all these go, this will be a race to savour.

TEN TO FOLLOW (2)

Last week we gave you ten horses to follow from the Tote list of 500 in the £1m competition - entries due by Wednesday - but we only listed those strictly from this area and limited to one per trainer. We even had to omit Keith Reveley's charges from the list to keep within ten.

We have been asked by readers to give a Tote 10 from all areas, hoping to name those which will land some of the bonus races, such as the Gold Cup or Grand National.

Our high profile team is, including several of those horses which earned top points in last year's competition and some "doubles" from our own area, as follows. - Amberleigh House (Ginger McCain, last year's National winner, seen in a prep race at Wetherby at the weekend); Azertyuiop (Paul Nicholls, out for the first time and winning easily on his seasonal reappearance in the West Country this week); Beef Or Salmon (Michael Hourigan, the great Irish hope); Edredon Bleu (Henrietta Knight's old boy, and Derek Thompson's beloved "blue eiderdown", even though he lost on Tuesday to Azertyuiop, because it was on ground he hated); Inglis Drever and Young Scotton (two of Howard Johnson's hot team); Marlborough (Yorkshire owner Robert Ogden's pink and mauve silks will be seen to the fore on this Nicky Henderson charge); Moscow Flyer (Jessica Harrington's Irish charmer, sure to do well at the Cheltenham Festival); Our Armageddon and Tyneandthyneagain (both top scorers for Richard Guest last year).

Last week's ten, our area only: Granit D'Estruval (F Murphy); Hussard Collonges (P Beaumont); Inglis Drever (H Johnson); Jungle Jinks (G Moore); King Revo (P Haslam); Marsh Run (M Easterby); Our Armageddon (R Guest); Ryalux (A Crook); Silver Knight (T Easterby); Zibeline (B Ellison).
