PEOPLE in Teesdale are being asked to volunteer for a new service which provides support for families.

Sure Start Teesdale and Family Link, a project of Children North East, want to recruit new volunteers to support families with young children.

Gillian Quille, the programme manger of Sure Start Teesdale, said: "Many parents tell us that when the going gets tough, they can feel quite isolated and lonely.

"Family Link volunteers provide just the kind of friendly informal support that parents say they would like." Family Link volunteers are not health or social care volunteers but complement what other services have on offer.

Sure Start Teesdale and Family Link are to jointly promote their work in supporting families by publicity in libraries, shops and various groups around Teesdale.

There will also be a stall in the Barnard Castle Morrison store on November 24 where potential volunteers can meet the two groups.

Wendy Hindmoor, family link co-ordinator, said: "Our volunteers are all parents. They are of all ages and from many different backgrounds.

"We would particularly encourage men and grandparents to volunteer as they have such a lot to offer."
