A WILDLIFE garden created at a flood-plagued allotments was runner up in a countywide conservation awards scheme.

Bishop Middleham wildlife garden was awarded second prize in the community category of the Durham Wildlife Trust Conservation Awards 2004.

The project, which is close to two quarries, has seen an army of volunteers help to create a large pond on the abandoned allotments and provide safe havens for wildlife.

Judges said they were impressed with the community involvement, especially the contribution of local school children, along with the habitat creation and site access provision.

Volunteer Doreen Goldsmith, who collected the certificate, said: "I am thrilled and delighted that the wildlife garden has won the award and overjoyed that all the hard work has been rewarded."

The wildlife garden, which is managed by Sedgefield District Council, received a £150 prize from sponsors npower, which will be used to maintain and enhance the site.
