SALES of a beer to commemorate the memory of one of the region's football heroes have gone flat.

Bob Stokoe's Best beer was brewed by the Double Maxim Beer Company to remember one of Sunderland and Newcastle United's all-time greats.

But Asda stores has had to reduce the price of bottles from £1.55 to 98p in order to sell the remaining 24,000.

The good news is that the strategy appears to working, with hundreds of bottles being sold at a special push in Asda's Hartlepool store yesterday. And a total of 10p per bottle will still be donated to the campaign to erect a statue to the memory of Mr Stokoe, in Sunderland.

Bob Stokoe played for Newcastle United in the 1950s and was manager of Sunderland when the club won its victory over Leeds United in the 1973 FA Cup final.

He died at the University Hospital of Hartlepool in February.

Double Maxim Beer Company brewed 5,000 cases of the beer and 2,000 are still remaining.

A total of £73,000 is needed for the statue, and more than £40,000 has been raised.
