AMONG a range of fundraising cards and notelets produced by the Friends of a Teesdale church are two booklets written by historian Alan Wilkinson.

Mr Wilkinson, a retired head of English at Barnard Castle School and a member of the town council, is a local historian and his knowledge has been put to good use in the stylish publications.

The first - A Brief History of St Mary's Church and its Place in the Community - came about as a result of Mr Wilkinson being asked to deliver the inaugural lecture to the Friends on July 6, 2003.

"Because of the strong interest shown by the many who attended his talk, it was felt that it would be appropriate to put Alan's words into print," said Peter Wise, treasurer of the Friends, who was responsible for the design and printing of both.

The second was written by Mr Wilkinson just under a year later to coincide with the renovation of the church clock and the provision of improved access to the bellringing chamber and cloakroom within the tower.

It is now possible for groups to be given guided tours of the interior of the tower by prior arrangement with the church. It is also open to the public on pre-arranged days, which Mr Wise says is proving popular.

The booklets cost £1.80 and £1.50 respectively and are available from the table within the church, which is open daily, or from Mr Wise on 01833 637904.
