MOVIE buffs will this week be given the chance to enjoy films from northern and eastern Europe.

Kino, the regular film night at the University of Teesside, in Middlesbrough, is linking up with the Tyneside Cinema in Newcastle, to present the Northern Lights Film Festival.

Screened at Kino will be two Swedish films as well as an award-winning movie from Poland.

Organisers are hoping that overseas communities on Teesside will join local filmgoers to support the event.

Kino organiser Bob Fischer. said: "We know there's a good-sized Swedish community on Teesside, as well as a sizeable number of Poles.

"This is a rare chance to see films from their own countries, in the original language, on the big screen."

The programme at the university cinema includes Kopps, a Swedish comedy about a small town police force who fake crimes to keep themselves in business, and Hip Hip Hora, an acclaimed bitter-sweet comedy set among teenagers in a Swedish high school.

Also being screened is Squint Your Eyes, a Polish film about a young runaway who finds herself hiding out on a remote farm.

It won an award at the International Filmfest in Germany and has been critically acclaimed around the world.

All three films will be shown with English subtitles.

The screenings all start at 7.30pm, beginning tonight

Passes to see all three films are available for £5 on the night.

For those without passes, tickets are £4 (£3 concessions).
