A SEASIDE-style railway could be built in the heart of one of the region's market towns.

A near-perpendicular railway is only one of the ideas put forward for the future of Knaresborough, near Harrogate, North Yorkshire.

It would run from Waterside, by the banks of the Nidd, to the Castle Top, providing a direct link between two of the town's biggest attractions.

The idea is among a number put forward by Knaresborough Renaissance Town Team, who have been working with consultants funded by the regional development agency Yorkshire Forward.

They have been trying to put forward a vision of how the town could look 20 to 30 years in the future, and are now after the public's views.

Other ideas include the creation of a theatre and concert complex by the river, relocating the railway station and displays about the castle and its surroundings.

Also under consideration is the establishment of a one-way system around the town to relieve traffic congestion in High Street.

Members of the team will be manning a stall in the Market Place on Saturday, December 4, and Wednesday, December 8, to get the public's views.

Team chairman Bill Hoult said: "We need to know what people want for the future, not just about the team's ideas, but any burning issues that individuals and groups feel strongly about.

"There will be a lot more consultation with local organisations over the next few months to get as wide a range of opinions as possible, before a final report is produced."
