DRIVERS who park on the pavement in a village could find themselves in trouble with the police.

When the village of Heighington, near Darlington, was founded, the streets were not designed for the motor car.

And there is a big problem with people clogging up the pavements with their cars, particularly near the village school.

At a meeting of Heighington Parish Council, councillors heard from beat police officer PC Julian Brown, who said he would take photographs of any vehicle parked in a dangerous or reckless manner.

This could be used as evidence against the driver.

He said: "I have been looking quite closely at school parking, we will continue to monitor this and tickets will be issued."

He said the headteacher of the school was hoping to get a footpath across the school playing fields, which would help the problem.

Councillor Michael French said there was also a problem with cars parking on pavements near the village shop.
