Hundreds of Cleveland's court dodgers will receive a visit from the police this Christmas.

Letters are being sent to people who have failed to turn up for court appearances with a message advising them to visit their nearest police station or face the consequences.

Chief Inspector Gary Stephenson warned offenders they could find themselves in a cell over the festive period.

He said: "Those who receive and ignore the letter will make their situation worse. It should not be ignored.

"This is simply an advance warning before the operation starts. Those that surrender will avoid that late night or early-morning knock."

About 500 letters are going out in the first phase of the multi-agency operation called Turn Up.

The message reads: "A warrant is in existence for your immediate arrest following your failure to answer bail at court."

Similar letters are being distributed among solicitors' practices in the area that regularly deal with criminal matters to highlight the aims of Turn Up and urge them to help their clients help themselves.

Chief Insp Stephenson said: "Solicitors will be asked to explain to their clients the advantage of having matters dealt with as soon as possible and even to proactively contact those who they are aware have not answered bail.

"They should be encouraged to attend their local police station as soon as possible.

"We intend to give fair warning to all. Posters are going up in many pubic buildings - including prisons and benefit offices - to hammer home the message to those that have ignored bail.

"It is simple. Turn up before time runs out and you are locked up."
