A FAN is determined to pursue a campaign to bring greyhound racing back to Teesside, despite meeting rebuffs and apathy.

Ken Alderson, who was chairman of the owners' association when Middlesbrough's dog track closed nine years ago, said: "I will not give up, it's a matter of principle now."

Despite a 14,000-name petition, Cleveland Park speedway and dog racing stadium closed in 1996 to make way for classroom extensions for a neighbouring school.

At Mr Alderson's invitation, a leading member of the Northern Racing Group will visit Teesside shortly to investigate the potential of a purpose-built stadium.

The group is willing to spend £10m building a stadium in central Teesside. Such a facility could also host music concerts and athletics meets.

Mr Alderson said he had been encouraged by approaches to Stockton Borough Council, after he said he was "fobbed off" by neighbouring Middlesbrough.

He said: "Stockton seem to have a totally different attitude. Although I have only briefly spoken to them, they seem quite enthusiastic. They have a couple of potential sites.

"I am hoping to be involved in discussions with Stockton Council."

Mr Alderson said Middlesbrough Council told him land in the area could be available in seven to 12 years with compulsory purchase.

The Northern Racing Group was told last year that a potential site was too close to chemical works for safety and could not be considered.

Mr Alderson said he wanted to know why Middlesbrough's £500m Middlehaven redevelopment of housing, offices and leisure facilities is going ahead when it is nearer industry than the rejected dog track site. However, Middlesbrough Council said it was bound by Health and Safety Executive guidance.

Mr Alderson has written to the executive for an explanation.
