A STRIKING art exhibition is to open on Saturday.

German photographer and sculptor Reinhild Beuther, 34, is in Hartlepool this week putting the final touches to her display, Double Vision.

She uses computer technology to put layer after layer of images of the same person on top of each other.

The photographs are put in a large lightbox and the image is lit from behind. The Berlin artist said the idea was to keep as much character of the individual as possible in the image.

She said: "It's very hard to explain what they look like, the only thing to do is come and see for yourself. They are fairly stark, classical images but I didn't want them to be some kind of morphed and strange picture. I wanted them to be recognisable. I'm a trained sculptor, so I've come at photography from that point of view."

Many of her images are of family members including her husband, son and parents.

Mrs Beuther is known in Hartlepool for her permanent sculpture at Summerhill Park.

The display will be at Hartlepool Art Gallery until Sunday, February 27.

Admission is free, but the gallery is closed on Mondays.
