PEOPLE in the North-East and North Yorkshire have been advised to take extra care on the roads, with heavy snow forecast for this morning.

High winds have also been forecast -leading to the possibility of localised blizzard conditions.

As the first showers were reported in the region early yesterday evening, the Met Office was predicting heavy snow showers, with a temporary covering of snow possible across the region.

The Highways Agency last night said winds may also affect exposed sections of roads, resulting in dangerous driving conditions.

Strong winds are expected to persist today, with gusts of about 50mph.
