POLICE are launching a crackdown on rowdy youths to bring peace to two communities in Stockton.

Dispersal orders are being issued for parts of the Bishopton Road, Green Lane and the Primrose Hill areas to curb anti-social behaviour.

Officers will be able to disperse gangs of youths and order them out of the area if they are causing problems between 5pm and 5am each day during the five-month crackdown.

Since early November, there have been 158 incidents of disorder reported and 65 incidents of criminal damage, arson or threats to cause damage in the two areas.

Acting Chief Inspector Darren Best said: "We are committed to stamping out trouble on the streets and this is one of the steps we are taking.

Residents need to be reassured that we are doing something about the young people who loiter in the streets, drinking, fighting, causing damage and intimidating the local residents."

The order was introduced yesterday and runs until July 1.

Carolyn Crean, crime and disorder manager for Stockton Borough Council, said: "We are aware that there have been problems. However, there has been a reluctance by residents to report incidents.

"We hope that by designating dispersal areas, residents will see an active presence and a visible reduction in problems."
