FOUR young computer experts are helping the British Red Cross, after developing IT systems for the charity's North-East offices.

Karl Pountney, Daniel Maxwell, David Johnson and Tim Pickering, from Stockton Sixth Form College, developed two computer systems for the charity's headquarters in Westgate Road, Newcastle.

The students devised the systems after taking part in the North-East Schools Industry Partnership at Durham University last July.

They were presented with Gold Crest Awards (Creativity in Science and Technology) at Stockton Sixth Form College.

Karl and Daniel created a database monitoring comprehensive information about courses run in the North-East. The database includes a raft of information including venues, trainers, and costs.

David and Tim helped streamline a system used to vet applications from would- be Red Cross volunteers. It has been designed to prevent delays in the complex checking procedures.

Sheila Picking, head of Stockton Sixth Form College computing and ICT department, said: "The students have done a brilliant job which has been well received by the Red Cross, and we are very proud of their efforts. They gave a lot of time and effort to the project."
