A TOWN clerk cleared of misusing council resources after being sacked by a panel of Labour Party members is calling for her accusers to resign.

Leanne Plant lost her job at Thornaby Town Council, near Stockton, after she gave permission to the Thornaby Independents Association (TIA) to print political leaflets using a council photocopier.

The mother-of-three was sacked last year by a disciplinary hearing of Labour Party members.

But a tribunal earlier this week overturned the decision, saying the 30-year-old had been the victim of a political battle between the TIA and Labour.

Ms Plant said she was hoping to get back her job as town clerk and that she wanted those behind her dismissal to resign.

She said: "I'd really like my job back but under the right circumstances - I'd like to see some resignations. Since some councillors have said they cannot work with me, I think it only right that they go."

A meeting of the council has been called for Tuesday, where barristers will be on hand to discuss the implications of the ruling.

A Labour Party spokesman said members were unable to comment on the tribunal decision until after next week's extraordinary meeting.

A decision on compensation for Ms Plant and whether she should be reinstated is expected in the next couple of months.

Councillor Steve Walmsley, leader of the TIA, insisted she had done nothing wrong.
