THE founder of a leading North-East charity has been appointed the first Children's Commissioner for England.
Professor Al Aynsley-Green, a former head of child health at Newcastle University and now a professor at Great Ormond Street Hospital, in London, was yesterday appointed to the role by Education and Skills Secretary Ruth Kelly MP.
He will act as an independent champion for the interests of children and young people.
Prof Aynsley-Green is best known in the region for his role in setting up The Children's Foundation in 1990, two years after a damning report highlighted the poor state of children's health in the North-East.
