THE band of volunteers who donate their own time to support council services have been formally thanked for their efforts.

More than 500 people give their time for free to support services in the Hambleton area and they take on a wide variety of roles.

They act as everything from museum guides and walk leaders to tourist information staff and arts co-ordinators.

"Without the help of these volunteers, many of the museums, attractions, arts groups and the like would not be able to survive," said museums officer Lynda Powell.

"They are a vital part of the work of the district council and their constant support is greatly valued."

Among those thanked were council staff Community Link officer Lisa Wilson, the World of James Herriot visitor services officer Janet Watson, Walking to Health officer Marion Archer, district museums officer Lynda Powell and TIC manager Karen Galloway along with volunteers Linden Purvis (Northallerton Male Voice Choir), Ann Hutchings (Hambleton Arts), Margaret Petty (Bedale Museum), Tony Howard (Northallerton and Villages Community Plan Forum), Pat Dent (The World of James Herriot) and John Mawby (Walking to Health leader)

The Home Office designated this year as the year of the volunteer and is working with Volunteering England and CSV, well established volunteering organisations, to promote the scheme.
