YOUNG musicians are busy tuning up their instruments for the regional round of the National Festival of Music for Youth.

Northallerton College, North Yorkshire, is hosting the competition on Saturday, when schools from across the region will be aiming to impress two festival adjudicators.

The judges will nominate the best performers, who will go through to the final at Birmingham Symphony Hall, in July.

Northallerton College, which has made it to the final on six previous occasions, is entering its jazz group and concert band.

Head of music Garry Firth said: "We're putting forward two bands this year and there will perhaps be more interest than ever in us, because we're hosting the region as well."

A coffee morning organised by students from the college at Northallerton Town Hall last Saturday raised £300 for the music department's musical instrument fund.
