TRANSPORT plans that could have a key role in the regeneration of the Tees Valley are reaching a crucial stage.

Consultants recently completed an 18-month study into ways of upgrading the A66 trunk road around Darlington.

They were commissioned by the North-East Assembly to undertake a major study of the road between Blackwell Bridge and the Great Burdon roundabout.

The consultants, WSP/Carl Bro, have put forward a proposed £52m scheme to help relieve congestion on the road, which is expected to carry 41,000 vehicles a day by 2025.

It includes dualling the A66, with junctions between the A67 Yarm Road junction and to the east of the Great Burdon roundabout.

There would also be improvements at all other junctions on the A66 to the south of Darlington and a park and ride scheme at Morton Park.

Local authority leaders had called for full dualling of the road, but conceded that the project suggested could be a stepping stone towards that.

A report on the subject will now go before the assembly on Friday, March 11.
